About Chanderi

Taking place in the Islamic month of Sha’ban, Shab – e – Baraut is traditionally celebrated to atone one’s sins in anticipation of the Day of Judgment. In Chanderi, it involves the whole Muslim community in the practice of commemorating the dead.

Men gather in graveyards near their homes during midnight and pray for forgiveness and peace for the deceased. After the graveyard shift, men head towards mosques and pray all night, asking for forgiveness and peace for the departed souls.
