According to legend, the genesis of Chanderi proper, that is the present town of Chanderi is attributed to an overriding oral folk tradition, the ‘miracle of water’, the protagonist of which is Kirtipal, the seventh king of the erstwhile Gurjara – Pratihara dynasty.

• 6th Century AD – A Hindu temple constructed during the Gupta Period found in the village of Behti, about 20 kms south east of Chanderi, which was probably a thoroughfare during the Gupta Empire, located on an important trade route.8 – 10th century AD – Gurjara Pratihara rule commences in Boodhi (Old) Chanderi.
